Motion

motion.dev

The animation library formerly known as Framer Motion, handling layout, scroll, gesture, spring and 3D animation in React, Vue and plain JavaScript from a small API surface.

What is Motion?

Motion animates what CSS cannot: position and size changes shared between components through layoutId, exit animations kept alive by AnimatePresence, scroll progress linked to any value using the browser's ScrollTimeline where available, gestures with keyboard-aware press and momentum drag, and physics springs defined by stiffness, damping and mass. Three.js meshes, materials and shader uniforms can be driven by the same springs and timelines.

The package installs with npm install motion and is free and open source under MIT. Motion+ is the optional paid layer with UI components, a large example vault, the AI kit that feeds documentation to coding agents, Performance Doctor for slow-animation audits and Motion Studio, a visual timeline editor that tunes timing and easing on a live site.

Best for

  • Animating React interfaces without hand-writing CSS keyframes
  • Building scroll-linked and drag interactions that feel native
  • Giving an AI agent accurate animation docs through the AI kit

Key features

  • Runs in React, Vue and plain JavaScript
  • Mini animate function starts at 3.2kb, with LazyMotion for loading features on demand
  • Layout, scroll, gesture, spring, exit and Three.js 3D animation
  • Motion+ adds UI components, an examples vault and Motion Studio
  • MIT licensed and free; previously called Framer Motion
